After 26 years of living in the UAE, I can confidently say that we know how to do a pool day.
We know the best time to arrive, which lounger gets the breeze, and that “just one quick dip” is usually followed by a long lunch, several conversations and the slightly optimistic promise that we will definitely reapply sunscreen in a minute.
What we do not seem to have properly solved is the bit after the pool.
You have had a swim. You are still a little damp. Your hair is doing its own thing. You may want to sit at the café, walk back through the hotel, pop to the spa or simply return to your room without gripping a towel around you as though it is part of a particularly stressful team-building exercise.
And this is where the usual options start to fall apart.
A towel does what it says on the tin, but it is not really designed for walking, ordering an iced coffee or carrying your phone. It needs one hand devoted to holding it up at all times, which is rather demanding for a rectangle of fabric.
A hotel robe is absorbent, of course. It is also often thick, heavy and surprisingly warm for something you put on immediately after trying to cool down. In a Dubai summer, it can feel a little like wrapping yourself in a very polite duvet.
Then there is the classic pool cover-up. A kaftan, sarong or oversized shirt can look lovely, and there is absolutely a place for all of them. But if you are still wet underneath, they are simply a layer over the problem. They cover you, but they do not help you dry.
The pool is the easy bit
The real question is not what to wear in a Dubai hotel pool. Swimwear is the straightforward part.
The more useful question is: what do you wear when you are out of the water, not ready to get dressed, but still want to feel comfortable, covered and vaguely like yourself?
